Photography has recently become a hobby, as has the editing that can add so much to a picture. Mark was kind enough to buy me a DSLR camera for my birthday this year, so I've been having a blast playing! There are occasional contests that I participate in just for fun, and I need some place to post my entries, so here they are. Hope you guys get a kick out of watching me learn!

I Heart Faces - Fix-It Friday, August 20, 2010

It's Fix-It Friday over at I Heart Faces, where we are given a photo to practice editing.  Here is my attempt at improving it.

The original (such a beautiful little girl!):

8-20-10 Original

After my edits:

8-20-10 2

I did my edits in PS Elements 8, and these were the steps I took:

1. Cropped it.
2. Did a slight brightness/contrast adjustment.
3. Sharpened the edges a bit (used the method shown here: http://www.naturescapes.net/042004/ps0404.htm.
4. Ran the unsharp mask on her eyes: 88%, 2.0 Pixels; 0 Threshold
5. Used the Adjust Color for Skin Tone tool in PSE (ran it on a duplicate layer, then gave that layer a 75% opacity).
6. Ran Isabelle LaFrance's Ephemeral action, and changed the Fleeting Fill layer to 10% opacity.
7. Made two duplicate layers (after flattening), and changed the blend mode to the first one to multiply at 15% opacity, and the second one to soft light at 25% opacity.
8. Added a little more contrast to the background.
9. Darkened the edges of the background a little bit with the burn tool.

This was what I ended up with:

8-20-10 2

The action I used was a freebie from Isabelle LaFrance: http://ilafrancephoto.blogspot.com/2010/03/new-free-ephemeral-actions-for.html. She offers a ton of cool, free actions, so go take a look!
